“The room was very modern and clean and the hotel is located in a safe and quiet part of Amsterdam, not too far from the city centre and there is a tram stop only around 100m away. We also liked that we could rent bikes here and the cafe downstairs was great. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. The room looked exactly as it did advertised.”
The English-style bed and breakfast set-up was not commonly found option of accommodation in Amsterdam. But with the scarcity of hotel rooms these days, this accommodation service is becoming more popular. Today a few private landlords and some agencies specialize in renting rooms as a bed and breakfast. City is full of cafes and breakfast bars so most of the so-called b&b’s actually do not serve breakfasts. These Amsterdam accommodations are referred to as holiday apartments.
Budget accommodation can be found just a short walk away from the city centre. Leafy Oud-West, which borders Vondelpark, or vibrant De Pijp are desirable neighbourhoods, which offer a variety of comfortable hotels.
“Just perfect. 4 metro stops from center and station (stop just close to hotel). Nice staff and bar, 2 clubs, restaurant. Breakfast complete and really tasty. Room tiny and comfortable with nice view of the city.”
The best area to stay in Amsterdam will depend on what you’re visiting for: history and culture, epic nights out or a bit of both. We’ve put together a quick guide to the best places to stay in Amsterdam, and some of our favourite hotels in each area.
Pros: Cannot say enough about how great our stay was here! We extended our stay by a day we loved it so much. The prices were very reasonable. They checked us in 2 hrs early with zero hassle. All of the room supplies were included. While not exceedingly spacious, everything about the room and hotel oozed modern style. There was interesting literature on the shelves. The beds were clean and comfortable. In the lobby was a hip restaurant with delicious and affordable faire which we frequented almost every day, and at night became a popular bar until 1 am. There were many other places to eat, shop, or stroll past from the Hoxton’s central location, but it was far enough removed from the main tourist areas to feel somewhat local. I would recommend this place to anyone except maybe those traveling with children, as I believe they had to “cheat” to fit us into a single room, and we are smaller than your average humans as it was.
The apt was fully equipped with beautiful artwork and a lovely fresh bouquet of flowers. Those nice touches made it feel like home. Host was welcoming and provided a great deal of info re transits, etc.
Pros: The location was very convenient and accessible and the staff was very accommodating. Our room was not ready when we arrived nor was it ready when they told us to return. The management responded with an upgrade at a reasonable rate and free drinks at the bar. The rest of the staff was also great. We enjoyed a bottle of wine in our room & the bartender opened our bottle without corkage fees, gave us crystal glasses to drink out of & even gave us some snacks to enjoy, all on the house! Overall a very great experience; we would consider staying there again!
Amsterdam een super mooie stad waar de shoppingstraatjes en pleintjes volledig aan uw verwachtingen voldoen. Super gemakkelijk om de metro en tram te nemen. Ga zeker eens langs bij het new york steakhouse op het Leidse plein!

Pros: This hotel was in a great location and had very friendly staff. The room set up was a little strange. The bathroom was all glass and lacked privacy. The bed was also placed strangely with the foot of the bed against the wall. This was a very clean hotel, and one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in.

De Pijp, Amsterdam’s “Latin Quarter” is a trendy residential area with an abundance of cafés, bistros, shops and restaurants. This bustling neighbourhood lies between Museumplein and the River Amstel and plays daily host to the city’s oldest street market, the Albert Cuypmarkt. Picturesque Sarphatipark is a pretty oasis in de Oude Pijp – a haven of calm in the middle of this lively neighbourhood. View hotels.
Pros: Nice rooms with large comfy beds. Great location just across from Central Station and the drop off point for the bus to and from the ferry. Staff were friendly and attentive and the price for the room was very reasonable. All in all a great hotel!

Cons: Our room was on the first floor, so keeping the windows open at night for a breeze did not work out as the street noise was too loud. Our last night we noticed a small visitor in our room, a mouse, who was persistent and did not want to leave. It was our last night so we just said our goodnight to our guest and slept, it’s an old building so I don’t think it is an “infestation” but rather something that comes with staying in an old, large building.
Pros: The location is great, opposite Centraal Railway station and you avoid the added cost and hassle of catching a cab to your hotel. Most tourist spots are within walking distance. Staff was great, they let us check in early and check out late which helped us a great deal.
TV/cable did not work. We called to have it fixed, was assured someone would come to look at it. No one did; kitchen equipment was inadequate, for example only 2 teaspoons; narrow bedrooms require crawling in and out of bed from the foot of the bed. One bathroom overhead light didn’t work. Kick plate under kitchen counter attached with tape and kept falling down.
Pros: Other than the location, this place really was just so-so. Most Marriott Courtyards are cleaner, more comfortable, and have much better service. For the price, however, it wasn’t a bad deal and proximity to both Amsterdam Centraal and many tourist attractions made up for the lack of aesthetic appeal and customer service.
Backpackers looking to spend the night in a cheap, friendly hostel will find themselves welcome at The Flying Pig, with two hostels slap bang in the city centre – one downtown (next to Amsterdam Central Station) and the other uptown. For ethical accommodation with an artsy twist, get with the cultural programme at WOW Hostel, west of the city centre.
“Geweldig hotel! Voorzien van alle luxe en vriendelijk personeel. Wij hebben bij Sazanka gegeten, fantastisch!! Ruime keuze bij het ontbijt. Spa en zwembad heerlijk!! Lounge op 23 etage fantastisch uitzicht.”

From the moment of booking online till leaving the apartment I felt taken care of. I was in contact with Vivian, who takes care of Esther’s apartments. She was quick with her replies to all my questions (I had many…) and also gave me awesome hints and tricks for my first stay in Amsterdam. Vivian was available and very flexible for our check-in time. The apartment itself was clean and made me feel at home. It is an apartment which doesn’t leak of character. Only the floor was pretty cold and I would recommend to future guests to bring warm socks or house shoes. In summertime, one might be happy with the cold. Heating, Wifi, hot water, beds: all perfect. The apartment is perfectly situated for guests who like to spend time in the city centre. Only a 10 minutes walk and you are there and still the road at the apartment is very quiet. The church bells are something different. I didn’t mind but my friend recommends earplugs. I highly recommend this apartment and will book again for the next time. Best regards Kim
In the summer several hippie-style campgrounds open their camping sites. These are not directly in the city, but most of them are within an easy biking distance of town. In Holland however the weather sometimes makes it unpleasant to stay outdoors. Some campgrounds offer chalets for such cases.
The house is very comfortable, has everything you need for a short or long stay, everything was clean. We were 2 couples, and we had a really nice stay at Brazil apartment. The hostess is very helpful and very kind too 🙂 Recommend!
In Amsterdam you can find Amsterdam hotels that accept pets. Hotels of all categories that welcome a dog or cat for a small cleaning surcharge. Many of these hotels are situated next to a park, where you can take your dog out for a walk.
“It’s perfect location near tram stop that takes you to the city centre. Hotel rents bicycles as well. There is a bar downstairs and you can buy some snacks water and beverages by the reception. But we find Lidl very near by which was convenient. We could borrow eu adapter for deposit of €10. Room had kettle and tea provided, also lovely map of Amsterdam that we had used a lot.”
